History of the Scholarship On September 27, 1960, the first North East Council of PTAs Scholarship Committee was formed. At the time, members were elected by written ballot. This group of dedicated individuals began with $140.00 and a dream for the future of our children. The scholarship was originally named the North East Scholarship, but was renamed on March 24, 1962, in honor of Dr. Virgil T. Blossom, the superintendent of the North East Independent School District. Just three years later, Dr. Blossom passed away. The first scholarships of $100 were awarded to Susan Welch from Robert E. Lee High School and Linda West from Douglas MacArthur High School on August 25, 1961. In 1967, recipients were added from Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt High Schools. In 1980, the James Madison High School recipient was added. The total number of recipients was increased to six in 2000 with the first graduating class from Ronald Reagan High School. In 2008, another recipient will be added to the list when the seventh North East high school graduates its first senior class. The amount of the scholarship has now grown to $325 for up to eight semesters making the total value of the scholarship $2,600. |
